Species text
This is a widespread but local darkling beetle, recorded throughout England and noted in both South and North Wales. It has been found in a wide variety of habitats including broad-leaved woodland, allotments, estuarine beaches and coastal shingle, usually in moist conditions. The species has been recorded under the bark of elm, hornbeam, chestnut, broom, gorse and probably on other tree and shrub species, and has also been found in moss, leaf-litter, dry rotten hawthorn and under driftwood. The removal of dead and decaying wood, including driftwood on the strandline, should be avoided (Hyman & Parsons. 1992). References
